Fairy Fly and Fire Fly, two costumes I created for one of my
best friend’s children, Becky and Joshua--or Becky Boo and Josh-ula. These
stylistic costumes combined insect wings with an oriental flavor. The wings
were shaped over bent wire hangers and accented with fabric scraps from the
main costume and colored rhinestones affixed with crafter’s glue. Becky’s wings
were pinned on, and Josh’s were strapped on by a velvet ribbon crisscrossed
over his chest. Becky’s underdress is modeled off my ebony jewelwing dress in a
purple and blue tie-dyed transparent fabric edged in violet ribbon. The robe is
of magenta fleece trimmed with white bridal lace-ribbon and tied with a thin
braided cord. Josh’s costume is a gee-style jacket in black fleece with a blue
flame pattern tied with a thick royal-blue twisted cord, worn over a simple
store-bought tee shirt and satin pajama bottoms. Both costumes were created
without a pattern and the robe and coat can be worn over pajamas for everyday
use. These costumes were entered in the local Halloween parade, they won first place in the Most Original category. The children
were accompanied by their father, Jesse, who was attired as…yes…a bug catcher,
complete with overly large bug net and a white jumpsuit dotted with large
plastic insects, courtesy of his wife, Chris.
