Oopma LoompaOkay...my most twisted costume ever! But wow, was it fun! Originally conceived as a hall costume for Wicked Faire 4: Wicked Chocolate Factory, I called it Oompa Goth.

I decided it turned out so well I had to resurrect it for the Lunacon Masquerade. Since this is a wicked oompa loompa (I know...I know...they are ALL wicked, but the difference is this one doesn't bother to hide it!) I went with a goth feel. Transposing the brown/white colors Oopma Loompaof the costume for the original Gene Wilder version of the movie, I did black velvet jodpurs with hidden snaps to secure them. To go with the visual feel of the original I created faux red buttons for the front and back for the straps of the overalls. To that I added striped stockings in red and black, as well as wrist and neck cuffs, all created by me. Because I was looking for a goth feel I made my own design for the shirt modifying a Vogue shell pattern that I made with a fine red cordroy that is completely open in the back, but secured with hook and eye from the neck to the middle of the back. I accented this with black trim at the joins just so I could wear the shirt as day-wear if I felt like it. The fishnet shirt underneath everything perpetuated the goth feel and also kept my arms from chaffing against the cordroy of the shirt.

For accessories I had a found-item cat-o-nine-tails and a large plastic lawn ornament egg. The egg I spraypainted black, added a stencil that spelled out "Bad Egg" and then spraypainted over that in chrome gold. It was interesting because the egg was not only textured, but we had to sand it a bit to minimize the seem and to help the paint adhere, so the hatchmarks on the finished product gave it a curious texture...particularly given my other prop ;) The boots aren't standard issue, but I think you'll The Bad Egg from my Oompa Loompa costumeagree, they were mandatory :) The egg was preset on stage by the ninjas on a tall folding bar stool covered in a green velvet cloth. It worked because the seat was padded and the stool had a curved back. Both worked together to hold the egg in place.

Now...for the make-up. For Wicked Faire I used Mehron white stick for the eyebrows and I used a shimmery bronze eyeshadow I had to cover my entire face. The rest of me I didn't worry about. To carry through the goth look I lined my eyes with black and used black lipstick. The hair was temporary hair cement in kelly green mixed with temporary black hair color to get the dark green tinge. It was more evident where I'm grey, but gave a nice cast to the dark hair as well. More subtle.

For Lunacon I substituted more Mehron stage makeup (not sure which tone) for the orange cast to my skin, but the rest of the above was the same. The first time I did the costume it took me twenty minutes just to get my hair right between mixing the color and shaping the classic style, and then I had the makeup to do. The second time I had twenty minutes to do it all...something I wouldn't recommend...I demolished the hotel bathroom trying to get everything done in time and it didn't turn out nearly as well as when I had a little more leisure to get things right.

As far as the presentation went, the MC announced my name and division, but not the costume title. I came on in what was supposed to be a backlit stage so no one could see anything but a vague outline. I was to dance about to a cobbled together CD made from the original soundtrack that said:

Greenroom PhotoOompa Loompa doopity-doo
I've got another puzzle for you
Oompa Loompa doopity-dee
If you are wise you'll listen to me...

...NOW! (and I crack the whip against my leg)

You can live in happiness too
As the oompa loompa doopity-do!

I then pick up the egg in a classic ooompa loompa stance and waddle off stage with it. Only then does the MC announce the costume title of DominEGGTrix. I was very pleased...I got both the laugh and the groan I was after from the audience.

The Wicked Oompa Loompa Gallery
The first two pictures are from Lunacon, the rest are from Wicked Chocolate Factory - Pixie Stix, by the way, are Wonka! Thought that was particularly fitting...they also, I have on good authority, make really good improvised riding crops...just if you were curious!
